Lignosulfonates belong to a family of lignin-based organic polymers that are waste by-products of the wood and paper processing industries. At present, the global annual production of lignosulfonates is about 1.8 million tons. Llsulfonates can be used for a variety of purposes, such as dispersants, concrete additives, flocculants, metal absorbers, mining dust suppressants, antioxidants, fertilizers, and building adhesives. As an environmentally friendly, non-corrosive and non-toxic chemical substance, lignosulfonate has been used in many fields.

 

 

The potential of lignosulfonate as soil stabilizer was studied by testing the shear strength, permeability resistance, erosion resistance, compaction properties and durability. Many researchers have reported the enhancement of soil geotechnical properties after lignosulfonate treatment, and the potential of lignosulfonate with sulfuric acid for soil stabilization. It enhances the physical and engineering properties of the soil, which is attributed to the combined chemical reaction of lignosulfonate and sulfuric acid with the soil, and the unconfined compressive strength of the silt after lignosulfonate treatment is improved. Clay mineralogy plays an important role in significantly improving the engineering behavior of lignosulfonate treated soils. The stiffness and unconfined compressive strength of the lignosulfonate-treated clay increased, and this enhancement was attributed to the electrostatic reaction between the lignosulfonate-water and soil particles mixture. The decrease of the thickness of the double electric layer particles and silica carbonate layer resulted in the increase of strength and the decrease of energy dissipation of lignosulfonate treated loess.
