Lignin is a complex phenolic polymer composed of four alcohol monomers (para-coumarin, coniferol, 5-hydroxyconiferol and sinapol), which is widely present in plant woody tissues. It is one of the components of plant cell wall, its main function is to harden the cell wall by forming interwoven mesh, is the main component of secondary wall. Lignin itself is insoluble in water and requires sulfonation (sulfite) and alkalization (OH) to dissolve in water. Lignosulfonates (such as sodium lignosulfonate, calcium lignosulfonate, etc.) are prepared by sulfonation, condensation, transformation, sugar production and other processes.

Lignosulfonates made from different raw materials have different properties. Compared with wheat grass lignosulfonates, tree lignosulfonates have higher molecular weight and better dispersion. The size of lignosulfonate molecular weight depends on the raw material itself and the subsequent chemical modification. At the same degree of sulfonation, the larger the molecular weight, the better the dispersion and suspension, because the larger the molecular weight, the greater the steric hindrance effect, can prevent the transfer of the lower layer or the original drug. The degree of sulfonation refers to the ratio of sulfonic acid group to the total molecular weight, some units are expressed in millimole gram ratio, the main reaction degree of lignin sulfonation, the better the degree of sulfonation, the better the water solubility, the higher the degree of sulfonation of Lignosulfonate regardless of the acid and base are dissolved well. If the degree of sulfonation is low, the solubility is certainly poor, and some cheap lignosulfonates also contain a lot of alkaline lignin, affecting the solubility of the lignin. Therefore, lignin with high pH value has poor dispersibility due to its high alkaline lignin content.

Calcium Lignosulphonate is a anionic surfactant. It is a water-reducing agent in concrete construction, and an excellent adhesive in refinery application.

a. It is used as mineral powder adhesive to improve recovery rate in refinery process.
b. It is an excellent adhesive for fireproof products. It can improve the products' strength and prevent cracks.
c. It reduces the viscosity of clay and improves the product yields in the ceramic fabrication.
d. If is added with phenol type additives in electrolysis, purer precipitates is formed.
